Notre Dame vs. Washington State Football Game - September 6, 2003

Club member Jody Kirwan (dark blue shirt on right) and his friend Scott Stengel decided to fly N2866W to South Bend Regional Airport (KSBN) to watch the opening game of Notre Dame football.  The weather could not have been more perfect.

Just after takeoff looking to the West toward Downtown Louisville.

Grissom Air Force Base in Indiana.

A nice lake in Central Indiana with several residential communities and what appeared to be a school of higher education.

Extended final for the airport (you can see the runway in the distance) flying directly over Notre Dame's campus, including the football stadium.

Another view (side-slipping) of the campus.

Short final -cleared to land.

Two hours after takeoff, 66W was on the ramp at South Bend with hundreds of other planes.  So many airplanes come to South Bend for the Notre Dame games, the authorities shut down several taxiways to provide additional ramp space.  The FBO was awesome.

South Quad on Notre Dame's campus.

The band firing up the fans (and one unhappy Washington State supporter).  The atmosphere on this campus is like none other in the world!

Inside Notre Dame's Basilica.

The coat of arms above one of the Basilica's entryways says it all.

The Golden Dome.

The Basilica and the Golden Dome (note the yellow and white flag of the Vatican flying from the Basilica).

Rumor has it that the inscription carved in the base of statute of Jesus if translated into English reads "Jump Mom - I'll Catch You!"

Touchdown Jesus on the side of Notre Dame's Library.

Here come the Irish!

Here's what 90,000 Irish fans look like - note the student section in green.

After a long game that went into overtime, Notre Dame won 29-26.  The football team came over to the student section to say thanks.

Great trip!
